Australian Ellen Perez and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami.

Ellen Perez enjoys the best result of her career at the Miami Open.
The 27-year-old Australian and her American Nicole Melichar-Martinez took a 6-7(7) 6-4 (11-9) second round victory today over Anna Kalinska and Cathy McNally.
The eighth seed duo saved match point in the game’s deciding tiebreaker, recovering from an 8-9 deficit and scoring three straight points to seal the win.
This takes world No. 17 Perez and World No. 15 Melicar-Martinez to the quarterfinals, where they will face sisters Latisha Chan and Hao-Jing Chan.
Perez, who is in Miami for the second time in her career, has never won a match in the WTA 1000 before.
She becomes the second Australian to reach the quarter-finals this year, joining Storm Hunter who took the lead yesterday with Belgian partner Alice Mertens.
In the men’s doubles, John Pearce and Brazilian partner Marcelo Melo lost in the second round to an Argentine combination of Maximo Gonzalez and Andrés Molteni.
