The Dominican Republic could get a significant boost towards the FIBA Basketball World Cup this year. Karl-Anthony Towns revealed in a recent appearance on the Off Guard with Austin Rivers podcast that he wants to play for the national team this summer.
“I have played this game so much that I know what to expect when I go out on the court, when I have someone guarding me and the like,” said CAT. “I never felt that someone could guard me.
“So I never have to go there to work on my five-on-five or one-on-one game. I know they cannot guard me. This is the confidence I got. But I also feel it works.
“This summer could be different. This summer I want to play for the Dominican national team. It would be great. I’m trying to work it out right now.”
The Dominican Republic is ranked 23rd in the FIBA rankings. The team does not yet know its opponent in the tournament.
Towns is averaging 20.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 33.3 minutes per game this season.
