Eddie Hearn discusses Davis’ tank PPV price of $84.99. Ryan Garcia
Adam Baskin: Promoter Eddie Hearn says the advertised PPV price of $84.99 for the Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Ryan Garcia is “a lot of money” to charge the fans for this event.
Although Hearn notes that the fight between Tank and Ryan is very important, he still believes that the organizers of the event overpriced it, which will undoubtedly deter many boxing fans from buying it.
If the organizers of the event accept huge financial costs, it will teach them not to throw big money on unproven fighters.
Tank Davis never brought in a big PPV in his ten year professional career and he mostly fought against the weak opposition fed to him by his former promoters at Mayweather Promotions.
In the case of Ryan Garcia, he is not a PPV fighter. His fights were regularly shown on DAZN. Like Tank, Ryan has fought weak opponents his entire career, and it’s entirely possible that he will never win a world title. Let’s face it, Ryan is a hybrid fighter. In other words, a boxer/social media wrestler.
Promoters and Showtime are counting on a huge number of fans of Gervonta (28-0, 26 KOs) and Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) on social networks who are willing to pay $84.99. Whether that happens will be interesting to see.
Ryan has over 9 million followers on Instagram, but many of them are believed to be teenagers and it’s unclear if they’ll have the funds to pay the $85 asking price to see him in action.
Many of them simply need to read his Instagram posts and look at his photos. In fact, they are not boxing fans. They are just followers of Ryan, the influencer/youtuber.
Hearn talks about Gervonta and Ryan’s PPV price
“Yes, it’s lumpy. I mean, we’ve already seen pay-per-views in the US for $89.99, $99.99. That’s big money, isn’t it? Yeah, it’s a big fight,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV of Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. Ryan Garcia on April 22 on Showtime PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“It’s sort of an industry practice for megaboys in America and I think it’s one of the biggest pay-per-views in America in a long time. This is not my fight,” Hearn continued about the Gervonta vs. Ryan fight on Showtime PPV.
“What is the highest price? We didn’t get to 29.99. 24.99,” Hearn said of the UK PPV price for fights.
Luckily for Hearn, he’s not promoting the Gervont Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight, so he doesn’t have to deal with the huge backlash from boxing fans this time around.
