Attention was drawn to the Big Gear Show in Park City, Utah last August, when attendees saw the Yakima MajorShady 270 for the first time. With 80 square feet and 270 degrees of coverage, yet packaged to dimensions that allow transporting a small car, the rig looked like a venerable oasis.
But it will be a few months before it appears. Now it is clear that this was not just a mirage.
MajorShady 270 released this month. 46.5 lbs. The awning folds into a compact roll 90 inches (7.5 feet) long. Slide it out from the left or right side of the car, deploy the support arms and pull back the included braces, and you’ll have sun or rain canopy wherever you go.
Yakima claims installation on “standard” T-slot crossbars, such as the patented HD Bar, JetStream or LockNLoad Platform, takes 10 minutes. The minimum cross member spread is 26 inches.
From there, you can add a wall for added privacy and shelter, or create a passageway on a sweltering day.
The awning is made of 420D cotton fabric with a polyurethane coating, decorated with a topographic pattern. The zippered travel case is made from durable vinyl.
MSRP: $949.
